spelling differ in Souter's marriage certificate, his name was spelled Davison and Ann's family name

Gelespie. John's age has been given as 74 at his death, but birth/death dates = 78. >From the book

of Robert Burns by Rev. Charles Rogers, he states: In Kiroswald churchyard a plain upright

tombstone presents the following legend; Here lyes the corps of James Davidson, late in Jamestoun,

who died Dec 16, 1732, aged 35; as also the corps of Neil Davidson, late in Littletown, who died Dec

5, 1737, aged 50. Also the corps of Bryce Davidson, late in Jamestoun, who died Aug 12, 1764 aged

67. Also the corps of James Davidson, late in Woodend of Thomastown, son to the above Bryce, who

died Sept 26, 1764 aged 30. This stone is erected (in 1764) by John Davidson, shoemaker in

Ballochhille, William Davidson in Douglastoun, John Davidson in Glenfoot and Bryce Davidson in

Woodend. "John Davidson in Glenfoot" was the prototype of "Souter Johnny" son of Bryce Davidson

who occupied a cottage on the farm of Jamestown. Birth not found in IGI or OPR Index. (before

moving into Kirkoswald) My problem is trying to resolve the father's name for Souter Johnny, was it

John or Bryce? There is a baptism for a John Davidson, Feb 11, 1728, father shown as John. There is

June 22nd.1761. She was the mother of 12 children and before her death could enumerate nearly

450 children, grand children, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great

grandchildren. She saw seven generations, had four sets of teeth, and although bedridden for the last

eight years retained her faculties to the last and was able to express her sense of divine goodness

and her reliance on the Lord Jesus Christ.

country districts}

From Anne Anderson Dec 2005. According to John Davidson born: 1805 (my great great grandfather

from Drummuck farm born at Kilgrammie Dailly Parish, he said that his grandfather was James

Davidson born: 1738 son of John Davidson and Marion McConachie and that his father John

Davidson b: 1778 was the uncle of John Davidson (Souter Johnnie) the cobbler from Kirkoswald and

the brother of Bryce Davidson so that he himself (James) was a cousin of Souter Johnnie. I checked

the dates of birth for all the family and noted there was a James Davidson born at Kilgrammie Dailly

Parish 1738.

When the weather improves I am taking my mother aged 82 years to the Dailly and Kirkoswald area

and to look at the MIs at Dailly and Kirkoswald. Her grandfather James born 1855 used to tell her

tales of the area as he lived with her family when he was elderly and he had always told the family of

the connection to Souter Johnnie, but in these days there was not the same access to information as

there is nowadays. My Great Uncle used to go to relatives all over the area and ask them all that they

knew so we had a beginning and my elderly aunt before she died had collected some information

that has become so helpful for me to carry this out for my mother

Drummuck Farm John Davidson b1805 signed a 19 year lease expiry 1877.78 signed Nov 1859. I

have two death dates for him but I think the correct date was 1876 12 july or 10 Oct 1879 ...do you

have the correct date Fraser? Well the rent was £100 per year and although this was the lease for

the next 19 years I have the rent books from 1840 so this would be the second lease signed. I have

1840 - 1875.

Ten years later 1884 my grandfather James sold up and there was a Roup Sale and all the items on

the farm listed. (I have that) That was in 1884. We understood that the reason that my great

grandfather had to sell was that he had lost three fingers in a farming accident (sheep sheering) and

could not fully work the farm as the other brothers had left John, to Australia, Hugh was a jeweler in

Ayr and William born 1853 worked on the farm and I'm not sure about Archibald

Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died on 05 Apr 1892 in Ladybank, Cottage, Kirkoswald, Ayrshire,

Scotland.

Margaret Davidson was born on the 22nd November 1841 and baptised on the 1st

December 1841 at Kirkoswald.

There is no record of death that I can find of Margaret in the Old Parish Records after this

date, but I know that she died in infancy, as one year and three months after Margaret's

baptism a sister was born on the 23rd February 1843 also named Margaret. Burial records

and Monumental inscriptions may bring her to light. Also on the birth certificate of my

Great grandfather James Davidson it states that he James is the last child born to John

Davidson and Janet Fergusson it is stated that he James was the 11th child, 5 boys, 5 girls

living one girl dead. So we can say that Margaret was dead by 1843. Also local

Newspapers still have to be checked for her.

Since writing this Sam I have found a death of a Margaret Davidson in the Parish of Dailly

April 1842.

John Davidson was born on the 8th September 1838 at Bargany Mains in the parish of Dailly. John

was the natural, eldest of Janet Fergusson a year before Janet married John Davidson at Bargany

Mains, Dailly. John did not appear in the 1841 Census at Drummuck Farm, Kirkoswald, but in the

following Census of 1851 he is noted as aged 12 years and attending school. In the 1861 Census he

is aged 22 years. It may have been an error in the 1841 Census omitting John's name or he may

have been being looked after by a relative.

Aged 25 years and working and residing at Drummuck Farm, John married on the 25th January 1864

Eliza Kerr from Ayr, aged 24 years who was employed as a Domestic Servant. Eliza was the daughter

of William Kerr a Railway Goods Foreman and Sarah McKnight. At the time of John and Eliza's

wedding Eliza's mother was deceased.

They did not appear in the 1871 Census so we can presume by that date they had moved to Australia

as noted in the Will of John's father 19th October 1876. John and Eliza settled on the North East of

Australia at Rockhampton, Queensland. They had a daughter Elizabeth Davidson who is believed to

have been born either on the passage over to Australia on board ship or soon after and then a son

James Kerr Davidson who was born 1867.

James when he married had a son Colin Andrew Roderick Davidson and James had a son Allan John

Davidson.

John is mentioned in his father's Will in 1876 and was bequeathed £1 Sterling. John was mentioned

in the Lease of Drummuck Farm as noted earlier so there had been a serious rift between John and

his father and that may have been one of the reasons why he left for Australia.

Mary Davidson was born on the 20th July 1840 at Drummuck Farm and baptised on the 28th July

1840 at Kirkoswald. Mary was the eldest daughter and in the 1841 Census was aged 10 months and

in the 1851 Census aged 10 years. On the 31st December 1856 at Kirkoswald, Mary aged just 16

years gave birth to a natural daughter who she named Janet after her own mother Janet Fergusson.

On the 28th January 1859 she married Archibald Scobie at Kirkoswald and two days later on the 30th

January 1859 at Dailly gave birth to a daughter who she named Elizabeth after Archibald's mother

Elizabeth McBlain.

Archibald Scobie was born on the 20th August 1836 and baptised on the 24th August 1836 at

Kilgrammie in the parish of Dailly. He was the son of John Scobie born 1797 and Elizabeth McBlain

born 1801 both from Dailly. Archibald's parents were married at Dailly on the 3rd May 1822.

Archibald and Mary moved to Hurlford outside Kilmarnock, Ayrshire and lived at Gilmours Square in

the village of Hurlford in the parish of Riccarton. In the 1861 Census Archibald was recorded as

occupation of Coal Miner aged 23 years. Mary aged 21, Janet aged 4 years and Elizabeth aged 2

years. The 1861 Census was taken on the 8th April, a week or two following the Census Mary took ill

and contracted Small Pox and Laryngitis which she had for three weeks. John McLatchy MD saw

Mary on the 11th May. The following morning at 7.45am on the 12th May, Mary died.

Janet Scobie, Mary's daughter, was recorded in the 1871 Census as living with her Grandparents at

Drummuck Farm and although recorded in the Census as aged 18 years she was only 14 years old.

Elizabeth at that time I believe was still living with her father Archibald Scobie who had possibly

remarried. When their Grandfather John Davidson died on the 12th July 1876 they were both left

Legacies, Elizabeth - 5/- Sterling and Janet - £10 pounds Sterling. I believe that possibly the reason

that Janet received the greater sum was that she was now on her own and had lived with the family

since 1861 the year of her mother's death working on the farm. Janet also was left a division of John

Davidson's Estate to be shared equally amongst four of John Davidson's children, in effect Janet's

aunts and uncles. This would enable Janet to have a secure start in life. She was aged 20 years.

Scobie (Davidson). She always called herself Janet Davidson, and the children's middle name was

Davidson. You were right in stating that Jane went to Drummuck Farm after her mother died and

Elizabeth stayed with her father and aunt Agnes M' Turk in Dailly. Archibald stayed with my Grt

Grandmother Jane Tate for 15 years, finally getting married in Maybole in 1881.Elizabeth aged 12 worked

as a house servant to a Matthew Guthrie a baker in Maybole. She married the son Matthew and she and

had a son Andrew who married Elizabeth Guthrie daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Guthrie who was a

widow. Another daughter of Matthew Guthrie and Elizabeth Scobie-Carol married some one in

Prestwick and as far as i know died there. I believe one of the photos shows Elizabeth Guthrie with

her daughter Carol. Carol became blind in later years. To get back to the wedding photo 3rd row 1st

Elizabeth Guthrie wearing a dark hat with white flowers, and the same row 4th from left is her

daughter Elizabeth who married Andrew Watt extreme left. I don't know who the couple were,

probably a grandson or granddaughter. I believe that Elizabeth Guthrie and her daughter are interred

in Holmston Cemetery along with Janet. The wedding photo shows a remarkable likeness between

Janet and Elizabeth. Regards Archie.

On the 27th September 1895 William Bowman died at Laigh Chapelton at 6am and was

buried at Maybole Cemetery on Wednesday 2nd October at 2pm. John then ran Laigh

Chapelton Farm and in the 1901 Census was running the farm aged 31. His mother Helen

was recorded as living at the farm and working as housekeeper, she was aged 55 years.

There is no record at this point of his father James McMurtrie who would have been with

the rest of the family. Helen was possibly there at the farm helping her son John as he

was unmarried.

In later years Helen and James moved to New Dykes Farm in Prestwick, Ayrshire with their

daughters, Jean (Jessie), Agnes (Nancy), Annie and Nell (Helen) and son John. They all

worked at the farm having their own particular chores. Jean (Jessie) went round with the

milk in a pony and trap in Prestwick, Nell died when she was young at New Dykes. John

went to manage a farm called 'Gilmourbanks' near Lochmaben, Dumfries and when the

owner of the farm died she left the farm to John. To help John, his sister Jean (Jessie) left

on the 2nd April 1925 at 9.30pm at New Dykes Farm at the age 84 years.

After the death of their father New Dykes was sold and Agnes (Nancy) and Annie joined

Jean (Jessie) at Gilmourbanks. John by this time had also died. They continued to farm.

Latterly they rented their land to a neighbouring farmer and just lived on the farm. A

nephew form Lochmaben came to see them regularly with his little son and daughter.

There was also a nephew who lived in Katrine in the Trossachs. As Agnes, Annie, Jean

and john never married the nephews could possibly be either Nell's, William's, James's or

Hugh's sons.....

William Davidson was born 26th June and baptised on the 6th July 1853 at Drummuck Farm,

Kirkoswald. In the 1861 Census it was recorded that he was aged 6 years and a scholar. In the 1871

Census aged 16 years and 1881 Census aged 27 years.

When William's father John Davidson made his Will in 1876, John made provision for the balance of

his Estate to be divided between William, Helen, Hugh, James and Janet Davidson Scobbie, the

daughter of Mary Davidson, after all the payments were made. William worked on the farm with his

younger brother James until the eventual sale of Drummuck Farm in 1884.

Six years later William aged 36 years married Margaret Shennan on the 3rd of June 1890. Margaret

was the daughter of James Shennan a shepherd, and Agnes McDowell and was born on the 5th April

1859 at Dailly. James Shennan and Agnes McDowall were married on the 24th November 1837 at

Straiton, Ayrshire.

William and Margaret's wedding took place at Bridge Mill, Girvan. Wedding invitations were sent by a

Mr and Mrs. Shennan to the wedding of their 'sister' Margaret. It was sent to William's brother James.

The invitation was dated 21st May 1890 for the evening of Tuesday 3rd June 1890 at eight o'clock at

[Brigmill], Girvan. Margaret's family home was Enoch Farm where her mother was living, her father

James Shennan being deceased. On the marriage certificate it has Margaret's name as Shinnan and

not Shennan and also William's mother as a Margaret Fergusson and not Janet Fergusson which

gave me numerous problems while researching.

about 40 years. Gt. grandfather of Anne Anderson contacted Dec2005.

When the weather improves I am taking my mother aged 82 years to the Dailly and Kirkoswald area

and to look at the MIs at Dailly and Kirkoswald. Her grandfather James born 1855 used to tell her

tales of the area as he lived with her family when he was elderly and he had always told the family of

the connection to Souter Johnnie, but in these days there was not the same access to information as

there is nowadays. My Great Uncle used to go to relatives all over the area and ask them all that they

knew so we had a beginning and my elderly aunt before she died had collected some information

that has become so helpful for me to carry this out for my mother. All the above from Anne Anderson.

Drummuck Farm John Davidson b1805 signed a 19 year lease expiry 1877.78 signed Nov 1859. I

have two death dates for him but i think the correct date was 187612 July or 10 Oct 1879 ...do you

have the correct date Fraser? Well the rent was £100 per year and although this was the lease for the

next 19 years i have the rent books from 1840 so this would be the second lease signed. I have 1840

- 1875.

Ten years later 1884 my grandfather James sold up and there was a Roup Sale and all the items on

the farm listed. (I have that) That was in 1884. We understood that the reason that my great

As you know Archibald's father John Davidson died in 1876, five years after Archibald left and married

Betsy. Do you have a copy of the Will of John Davidson? If not I will send it to you. Jessie, William

and James and two grandaughters of John and Jessie worked the farm until October 1884. On the

29th October 1884 Drummuck Farm was no longer in the hands of the family. (The Davidson's were

actually Tenants of the farm, it was owned by The Duchesse De Coigny from the Bargany Estate)

From there the family moved to Ladybank Cottage near Kirkoswald. William and James left to get

married and only Jessie and her two grandaughters stayed there at Ladybank until Jessie died 5th

April 1892 aged 77 years.

James moved with his wife to Newton, Ayr where my grandmother was born Margaret in 1890.

James at that time was working as a Dairyman. The following year they moved to Crossburn Farm at

Dundonald, James was employed as an Agricultural Labourer. They stayed in that area where they

then had John in 1892 then James 1894 and then William at Irvine. By this time James was recorded

as being a Ploughman. I think it was around this time that James had his farming accident - he lost

his three fingers on his left hand shearing sheep and therefore could no longer work on the land. The

family moved to Ardrossan where James worked at Ardeer Iron Works where he worked until he

retired.

Emily and James lived there until Emily died in 1923 from heart failure and James then moved in with

his daughter Margaret (my grandmother) and her family until he died in 1941 form pneumonia. He

lived there with the family and my mother (now aged 83) said that he was a very quiet man, reliving

storied of the farm and his life at Drummuck and used to sing her to sleep everynight. As youths the

boys (including Archibald I expect) used to walk down to the Maidens (near Turnberry) and

Crossraegal Abbey to play and possibly do their courting when they were older !

Served in World War 1 in Royal Field Artillery in Egypt and Palestine. Was at all the battles for Gaza

from March to October 1917.When war finished he was at Tripoli in the Lebanon. From beginning of

war to about the end of 1916 he was stationed on the Firth of Forth. Saw the Lion returning from the

Battle of Jutland.

He may have served in this unit.

Territorial Force 1st Line Lowland Division <52div.htm> from pre-war until transferred to 7th (Indian)

Division <Meerut_ div. htm> April 1918. Redesignated from III Lowland Brigade in May 1916.
